Vietnamese choreographer Alexander Tu Nguyen and his dance crew The Young Lyricist are representing Vietnam at the international Dance Proms competition at the Royal Albert Hall in London from November 5 to 11.

The Vietnamese dance crew made their way to the international dance competition after they defeated more than 300 dance groups around the world, making Vietnam the only Asian nation at the event.

Vietnamese-American choreographer Alexander Tu Nguyen said in an email to the Daily that The Young Lyricist comprises ten members aged between 12 and 16 with exemplary academic records and great passion for art.

The establishment of the dance group is aimed at creating a playground for young dance enthusiasts to nurture their love for dancing and master their dance skills, he said.

For their performance at the contest, the Vietnamese dancers are expected to wear ao dai (traditional Vietnamese long dress) designed by Trinh Hoang Dieu and perform the dance song “Colors” by musician Tran Tien to introduce Vietnam’s culture to international friends.

The contest is an opportunity for the Vietnamese dancers to show up the beauty of Vietnam and promote Vietnam’s dances to foreign spectators, Tu added.

Alexander Tu Nguyen has heaped praise from local audiences through TV shows such as Star Academy Vietnam 2017, So You Think You Can Dance, Vietnam’s Got Talent, Vietnam Idol 2015 and Wonderkids 2017.
Currently, the Vietnamese-American choreographer serves as a vice principal of the Soul Music and Performing Arts Academy where he has teamed up with popular Vietnamese-Australian singer Thanh Bui to inspire young artists to pursue their dream for dances.

Launched in 2011, Dance Proms is a joint effort by two of the world’s leading dance examination boards including the Imperial Society of Teachers of Dancing and the Royal Academy of Dance in conjunction with the oldest Royal Albert Hall of the UK.

The competition is one of the world’s biggest dance events held at the oldest Royal Albert Hall in London where legendary artists, including The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Adele, staged fantastic performances to entertain audiences.

The dance contest has become a rendezvous for outstanding dancers from different parts of the world to meet and show off their passion and talents for dancing genres such as breakdance, classical ballet, jazz and Latin.
