HCMC – Vietnamese President Tran Dai Quang and Chilean President Michelle Bachelet have discussed measures to enhance the comprehensive partnership between the two countries, according to the Government news website.

Chilean President Michelle Bachelet began her two-day State visit to Vietnam on Wednesday and will attend the APEC Economic Leaders’ Meeting in Danang City this weekend.

Her visit is aimed at strengthening the friendship and comprehensive cooperation between the two countries, especially in politics, external affairs, economy, trade and investment.

The two sides agreed to focus on potentials and strengths of the two nations such as agro-forestry-fishery, construction, biotechnology, mining, climate change adaptation, culture, science-technology, education-training and tourism.

Vietnamese President Quang said the nations signed some cooperation agreements on the occasion of the Chilean President’s visit.

He thanked the Chilean President and Government for actively promoting the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MOU) on taking care of children in Vietnam, especially Agent Orange/Dioxin victims, and supporting Vietnam to run for a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council in 2020-2021 and host the APEC Year 2017 in general and the APEC Economic Leaders’ Week in particular.

The two sides also discussed regional and international issues of mutual concern and agreed
territorial disputes must be settled by peaceful means based on international law, especially the 1982 United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea (UNCLOS) and diplomatic and legal processes.

The Chilean President expressed sympathy for human and property losses caused by Tropical Storm Damrey, saying Chile is ready to help Vietnam overcome consequences.

She highlighted the significance of the bilateral free trade agreement taking effect from 2014 to make Vietnam a strategic partner of Chile.

The MOU on cooperation in terms of children and adolescents is extremely important to Chile as it marks the close cooperation of the two countries in child protection, especially those seriously affected by Agent Orange/Dioxin. The Chilean Government will warn other countries about the danger of Agent Orange/Dioxin, she said.

Bachelet thanked Vietnam for supporting Chile to join the Treaty of Amity and Cooperation in Southeast Asia and expressed Chile’s desire to become a dialogue partner of the ASEAN Regional Forum to share experience in ensuring security in the Asia-Pacific region.

The two Presidents signed a joint statement and witnessed the signing of bilateral cooperation agreements, including a MOU on cooperation in the field of children and adolescents.
