Vietnam took the 34th place out of 80 countries and territories around the world in terms of English proficiency index, down three notches compared to last year, according to the latest annual English Proficiency Index announced by Education First (EF), a private international education company.

This year, the nation scored 53.43 points on a scale of 100 and is listed in the average group. The report reveals that English proficiency among Vietnamese people has made considerable improvements over the past five years. In the period 2011 to 2014, the country was among a group of countries with low level English skills, but has now moved up to a better level.

Hanoi and HCMC, Vietnam’s two biggest cities, have gained the top spots in the country, boasting the best English proficiency scores, while the Southeastern region and the Red River Delta also recorded the higher rate of people demonstrating remarkable English skills than other regions of the country.

Like last year, Vietnam also claimed the seventh spot in the Asian region, standing behind Singapore, Malaysia, the Philippines, India, South Korea and Hong Kong.

The EF English Proficiency Index survey was globally conducted by EF with one million adults in 80 countries who joined an online English test.

Founded in 1965, Education First is an international education company that focuses on language, academics, and cultural experience.
