Vietnamese poet Mai Van Phan has become the second Vietnamese poet to get Sweden’s Cikada literary award for his contributions to protecting the inviolability of life through his great poems, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

At the Cikada award ceremony in Hanoi on December 1, Lars Vargo, chairman of the Cikada literary award, was quoted by the Vietnam News Agency as saying that Phan’s works help the Swedes gain an insight into Vietnam, as well as Vietnamese people and culture.

The Cikada literary award has made significant contributions to the effort of the Swedish Embassy to spur cultural exchanges between the two nations, Vargo added.

The Cikada award was launched in 2004 to celebrate the 100th birth anniversary of famous Swedish poet Harry Martinson (1904-1978), and recognize the poet’s works that extol the sanctity of life.

Martinson won Nobel Prize for Literature in 1974. The Cikada award is named after a collection of poems which was written by the Nobel winner and published in 1953.

Phan, who was born in 1955 in the northern province of Ninh Binh, has received many literary awards in Vietnam, and his works have been translated into different languages such as English, French, Russian, Japanese, Korean and Chinese.

Hoang Thi Y Nhi became the first Vietnamese to win the award in 2015.
