The U.S. Consulate General in HCMC is joining hands with Student Exchange Vietnam, an educational organization with a mission to promote student exchange programs for Vietnamese and international youths, to host an American Abroad conference in mid-January in HCMC.

The conference, scheduled to take place from 8.30 a.m. on January 16 at the American Center on level 8 of Diamond Plaza in District 1, demonstrates an effort of the U.S. Consulate General to spur educational cooperation between Vietnam and the U.S. as well as provide networking opportunities between U.S. and Vietnamese higher education institutions.

The one-day conference with its theme “Campus Internalization” is meant to pave the way for Vietnam to establish relationships with American higher education institutions and woo more American college students to Vietnam in the coming time.

There will be scores of discussions at the event, giving participants the opportunity to get updated on the U.S. study abroad new trends and hear from leading experts about successful cooperation programs between the two countries.

Admission to the conference is free. Due to limited seats, visitors should register for the conference by January 10.

This year marks an important milestone as the number of Vietnamese students in the United States has surged for the 16th straight year, according to the annual Open Doors report released by the U.S.-based Institute of International Education, which focuses on international student exchange and aid, foreign affairs and international peace and security.

The report reveals that Vietnam has the sixth largest number of students in the U.S. with more than 22,400 attending American colleges and universities in the 2016-2017 academic year, a 5% increase from the previous year.

Previously, U.S. President Donald Trump highlighted in his speech at the APEC (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit: “Vietnamese students rank among the best students in the world. And that is very impressive.”
