HCMC – The VN-Index rose to a 10-year high in the fifth straight winning session on December 28, jumping 8.26 points, or 0.85%, from the day earlier at 976.72.

Market breadth was positive as gainers outnumbered losers by 158 to 120. However, turnover on the HCMC bourse fell strongly with 160.2 million shares worth VND4.4 trillion changing hands at the end of the day, down 32% and 24% respectively.

The VN30 basket saw up to 24 stocks rising while four others closed down, lifting the VN30 Index by 8.89 points, or 0.93%, at 966.91. Bank stocks advanced strongly in the afternoon, in which MBB and STB were the most actively traded stocks with 10.5 million shares and 9.6 million shares traded.

For the securities sector, SSI gained 3.4% at VND28,650 per share with matching volume of over 5.9 million shares. Meanwhile, BSI went up to the ceiling price of VND13,500 a share and HCM added 1.3% at VND60,300 per share.

The HNX-Index closed at an intraday high of 116.41 points, up 0.72% versus the previous session. The Hanoi market saw 54 million shares worth VND825 billion changing hands, both falling by 11% against Wednesday.

Lender SHB was the most actively traded stock with 7.9 million shares traded but it closed flat at VND9,200 a share. Among the securities stocks, VND hit the upper limit of VND26,100 a share and SHS climbed 5.5% at VND21,000 per share.

Foreign investors net bought VND220 billion of shares on the southern bourse and VND9.5 billion of shares on the northern exchange, mainly finance and bank stocks.

VCB increased 3% at VND54,100 per share as foreign investors net bought 678,000 shares worth VND36.6 billion of the lender. Besides, they picked 299,000 shares of insurer BVH, 192,000 shares of plastic firm BMP and 336,000 shares of steelmaker HPG.

In contrast, they net sold VND30.7 billion worth of shares of securities firm SSI and VND13.2 billion worth of shares of property firm VIC. However, the two stocks still increased over 3% and 0.3% respectively.

On the Hanoi exchange, foreigners actively bought shares of oil and gas stock PVS and construction firm VGC while selling shares of plastic firm NTP.

According to Saigon-Hanoi Securities Company, the VN-Index may hit a new high of 993 points in the near term.
