HCMC – The HCMC Tourism Department welcomed the first local visitors to the city on New Year Day.

These special passengers boarded a flight of Vietnamese low-cost airline Vietjet from Hanoi to HCMC on January 1.

The tourism department and the airline joined hands to greet them and give them presents including roundtrip tickets at the Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

The city tourism department plans to organize cultural, culinary, music and fashion events on a monthly basis to lure more visitors from other parts of the country to the city. It has launched its official YouTube channel called “Ho Chi Minh City Tourism”.

The department has clinched memoranda of understanding with HCMC-based Komtek JSC and Slovakia’s Asseco Group to make tourism applications on the Android and iOS operating systems.

Last Friday, the HCMC Tourism Association and transport companies, namely national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines, Vietnamese low-cost carrier Jetstar Pacific, and Saigon Railway Transport JSC, promised to reduce the prices of their package tours for local visitors by 50% to 70%.

The association’s members intend to develop tourism products in the central provinces of Nghe An, Ha Tinh and Quang Binh this year.

The city attracted 26 million domestic visitors last year. The city expects 7.5 million foreign and 26 million domestic tourists this year, with total tourism revenue estimated at VND138 trillion (US$6.07 billion), up from the 2017 figure of VND116 trillion.
