The HCMC Ballet Symphony Orchestra and Opera (HBSO) will organize a classical concert entitled “A night of Tchaikovsky and Shostakovich” under the baton of well-known Vietnamese conductor Le Phi Phi at the Opera House at 8 p.m. tomorrow.

The first concert of the New Year is an occasion for HBSO to honor great masterpieces by Russian leading composers P.I.Tchaikovsky and D.Shostakovich, who have made significant contributions to the world’s classical music.

Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor, Op. 23 is one of the most popular compositions by Tchaikovsky. The piece was composed in 1875 and first performed by German pianist Hans von Bulow. It was revised in 1889 and has been played by many famous pianists, including Vladimir Horowitz, Lang Lang and Van Cliburn.

Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 5 in D Minor, Op. 47, was premiered in 1937 in Russia by the Leningrad Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of conductor Yevgeny Mravinsky. The performance was a huge success and has heaped international praise over decades.

Born into a family with rich tradition of music in Hanoi, Le Phi Phi graduated from the Tchaikovsky Conservatory of Music. After graduation, he became the principal conductor of the Macedonian Philharmonic Orchestra from 1993 to 2000.

He has made performance tours to Macedonia, Russia, France, Germany, Italy, Greece, Sweden, Albania and Bulgaria and is currently a lecturer at the Macedonian Center of Opera and Ballet.

Since 1995, Phi has returned to his homeland on a regular basis to join hands with Vietnam National Opera Ballet and HBSO to connect overseas Vietnamese artists with domestic art show organizers.

Tickets to the show are priced at VND550,000, VND400,000, VND350,000, VND200,000 and VND80,000 (the last price being for students only). For bookings and delivery, call 028 38237295, or contact Ms. Huong on 0989 874 517 or Ms. Ngoc on 0903 604 539.
