Illegal fishing in foreign waters faces tough sanctions

The Saigon Times Daily

HCMC – The Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development has asked coastal cities and provinces to direct law enforcement agencies to impose harsh penalties on individuals and organizations conducting illegal fishing activities in waters of other countries, according to news website Tin Tuc.

The European Commission (EC) on October 23 last year issued Vietnam a “yellow card” in its worldwide fight against illegal, unreported and unregulated (IUU) fishing.

On December 13, 2017, the Prime Minister issued Directive 45/CT-TTg on a number of tasks and solutions to cope with the yellow card.

The PM earlier wrote to coastal cities and provinces asking them to take drastic measures to prevent Vietnamese fishermen from illegally fishing in foreign waters.

If such violations are detected in Ca Mau, Kien Giang, Quang Ngai and Khanh Hoa provinces after October 23, 2017, these provincial governments will have to take responsibility and report to the PM.
