Vinasun seeks compensation of over VND40 billion from Grab

HCMC – Anh Duong Vietnam JSC, the operator of Vinasun Taxi, has demanded the ride-hailing company Grab to pay over VND40 billion (US$1.76 million) in compensation for damage inflicted on the former, according to a court hearing in HCMC.

The HCMC People’s Court on February 6 opened the hearing of the Vinasun Taxi vs. Grab Vietnam case, with the latter accused of unfair competition.

Vinasun has accused Grab of unfair competitive practices of offering rampant promotions and undercutting fares which have had adverse effects on traditional taxi operators like Vinasun.

According to Vinasun, Grab should have registered its promotions to the HCMC Department of Industry and Trade in advance as traditional taxi firms do. Besides, Grab has given discounts for more than 90 days in a year which is against the Trade Law.

Therefore, Vinasun has sought compensation from Grab, as the former admittedly suffered a hefty loss of more than VND40 billion in 2016 and the first half of 2017.

Before the trial, Grab Vietnam said the company would provide information to the court for consideration and claimed Vinasun’s allegations are baseless.

A Grab Vietnam representative stressed the company has strictly conformed to prevailing regulations, including those about fair competition.

The court has asked the two companies to reach an agreement of reconciliation. While Grab wants the court to throw out the case, Vinasun pursues this lawsuit in a determined manner.
