In the lead up to the Lunar New Year (Tet) holiday, Tranh Khuc village in Thanh Tri District, Hanoi City has become busy as villagers have had to work from dawn to dusk to prepare their specialty - banh chung (square glutinous rice cakes stuffed with pork, mung beans) to meet the strong local demand.

The festive atmosphere of the craft village can be felt everywhere in the village as more than 90 households are racing against time to fulfill orders by customers from different parts of the nation, the Vietnamese News Agency reports.

Banh chung is an indispensable part of the Tet feast at many Vietnamese families, especially those originating in the country’s northern region, as the Vietnamese keep the long-lasting custom of offering the traditional specialty to their ancestors during Tet.

This year, the village is expected to provide some 470,000 cakes for the local market, with prices ranging from VND30,000 (US$1.32) to VND50,000 each.

Given by the unique and tasty flavors, banh chung in Tranh Khuc Village has built its fame in the country and had brought decent incomes for local people during the peak season of Tet.

The tradition of cooking banh chung ahead of Tet is fading as it takes more time and effort to make these cakes, but the village remains loyal to the trade as villagers have great passion and strong devotion to keep the traditional craft intact.
