Telcos prepare plans to prevent network congestion at Tet

HANOI – Local mobile carriers have unveiled plans to cope with possible network glitches during the upcoming Lunar New Year holiday, or Tet, which falls next Friday.

Network congestion frequently happens during the annual holiday as mobile users are inclined to upload photos and videos on social media rather than make calls or sent text messages on New Year’s Eve.

Therefore, carriers with large numbers of subscribers are working harder to keep their networks from interruption.

The military-run telecom giant Viettel Group said it is ready to guarantee the quality of its 2G, 3G, and 4G services in the forthcoming Tet. Notably, this is the first Tet the Viettel network has included 4G which now accounts for half of the total just after over 10 months of operation.

Viettel has recently installed 1,000 4G cell towers, bringing the total number of 4G transceiver stations to over 37,000 nationwide.

The group has plans to expand its 4G coverage to meet the increasing demand for hi-speed internet access such as broadcasting live video content and sharing photos and videos.

According to Viettel, the country will have around 125 festivals and public events on the occasion of this Tet. In a bid to ensure the quality of its network, Viettel has come up with solutions such as expanding capacity and sending out mobile base transceiver stations.

Viettel data shows the majority of its subscribers travel out of Hanoi City, Danang City, Binh Duong Province, Dong Nai Province, and HCMC. Meanwhile, many go back to their hometowns in Nghe An, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, and An Giang provinces.

MobiFone has also expanded its core network capacity to meet the growing demand for contact among its customers. Its server system which can handle more than 50 million text messages an hour is expected to meet customer needs during Tet.

Given the strong growth of mobile internet services, MobiFone has also raised its internet capacity to around 200 Gbps, an 80% rise against 2016.

MobiFone’s technical units have checked and maintained the entire system of transceiver stations and information lines in line with standards, and have prepared sufficient equipment and backup power to handle arising issues in a timely manner.

MobiFone has already optimized its network to carry out anti-congestion plans. It will dispatch mobile base transceiver stations, especially to crowded places, during the long holiday.

Another mobile carrier, VinaPhone, has taken similar measures to ensure information safety during Tet. It has plans to adjust network configuration and use mobile base transceiver stations in crowded sites.
