Airport transit station proposed at Trong Dong Stage

HCMC – Indochina Group has proposed the Ministry of Transport build a transit station at Trong Dong Stage near Ben Thanh Market to serve passengers of all carriers as a way to ease overload at Tan Son Nhat International Airport.

Passengers can check in and receive boarding passes at the station and travel to the airport by shuttle bus.

In addition to easing the airport’s overload, the station consisting of a commercial center, when in place, will offer customers a variety of services such as entertainment, catering and shopping.

The idea, however, can hardly be viable, according to the Civil Aviation Authority of Vietnam (CAAV), which says passengers may miss their flights due to traffic congestion on roads between the station and the airport.

It is baseless to assess the necessity and effectiveness of such a transit station in HCMC, said CAAV.

The authority said Indochina Group has not clarified the detailed operation process of the station to ensure good connectivity with Tan Son Nhat International Airport and has not worked out solutions to ensure security and safety in transporting passengers and their luggage to the airport.

In addition, the group has yet to assess possible impacts of the traffic system around the airport such as traffic jams during the transport of passengers and luggage.

The biggest problem is that the investor has not estimated the investment cost.

Therefore, CAAV proposed the Ministry of Transport assign Airports Corporation of Vietnam (ACV) to study transit station models in other countries and draw up a project to develop such a station in HCMC.

Many experts had earlier proposed building transit stations for check-in procedures at Hoang Van Thu and Gia Dinh parks. However, the solution is unworkable as residents tend to travel to the airport by their private vehicles while the number of buses to the airport is small.
