Tang Nguyet Minh, a HCMC-based athlete, has been picked to join the North Pole Marathon together with competitors from 22 countries and territories, becoming the first Vietnamese to show up at the world’s coldest marathon.

The competition slated for April 9 will be attended by runners from Australia, Brazil, China, France, Germany, Ireland, Japan, the Netherlands, the Philippines, Poland, Singapore, Vietnam, Russia and the U.S., among others.

Minh will be challenged in a 42-km race in freezing temperatures in the Arctic Ocean.

Minh told the Daily in a recent interview that the race is one of her greatest-ever challenges but this would be her once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to represent Vietnam in the international race.

All competitors will be present in Svalbard of Norway on April 6 before flying to their camps in the North Pole on April 8 to prep up for the race the following day.

The annual North Pole Marathon has been held since 2002 to raise funds for charity. The previous contests raised millions of U.S. dollars to support charities around the world, according to information on the website of North Pole Marathon (www.npmarathon.com).

The competition is called the world’s coldest marathon by Runner’s World magazine and has been acknowledged by Guinness World Records as the Northernmost Marathon on Earth.
