Stocks retreat after flat moving

HCMC – Having moved flat for two consecutive sessions, the local stock market saw a slight correction on March 29, sending the VN-Index down 5.21 points, or 0.44%, at 1,167.03.

Trading volume on the HCMC market slid 11% at 185 million shares but value rose 7% at VND6.6 trillion. Block deals again made significant contribution to the total turnover with nearly 35 million shares worth VND2.3 trillion traded.

VIC, a leading firm in the property sector, replaced dairy giant VNM to become the biggest listed enterprise for market capitalization. It rose to an all time high of VND115,000 per share, up 0.4% against the previous day, with its market capitalization reaching over VND303 trillion.

VNM, whose market capitalization was put at VND300.4 trillion, declined 1.9% at VND207,000 a share. Budget carrier VJC also lost 1.3% to VND222,000 per share while Vietnam’s top brewery firm SAB closed unchanged.

Bank stocks continued mixed movements with four stocks rising versus four others closing down. STB was the volume leader in the sector with nearly six million shares traded, dipping 0.7% at VND15,250 per share, followed by MBB with 3.4 million shares.

Among VN30 stocks, only five stocks increased, in which steelmaker HPG added 1.5% at VND60,800 per share. In contrast, securities firm SSI fell 1.3% at VND39,000 per share on matching volume of 3.8 million shares while construction firm ROS slumped 6.7% at VND134,700 a share.

For speculative and small stocks, FLC led the market for liquidity with nearly 14 million shares traded but the property firm fell 2.9% at VND6,260 a share. IDI, a consumer goods enterprise, ranked second with 11.5 million shares, closing at the reference price of VND13,800 a share.

Some property enterprises such as SCR, DIG and PDR advanced on strong turnover. In contrast, tourist firm NVT plunged to the floor price for the fourth consecutive day, closing the day at VND5,310 per share.

The HNX-Index dropped for the third straight session, losing 0.51% at 131.88. There were 41.8 million shares worth VND707 billion exchanged on the Hanoi bourse, down 2% and 11% against Wednesday respectively.

Among heavyweights, property firm CEO jumped 7.8% at VND13,900 a share on matching volume of 4.6 million shares and construction firm VC3 added 0.6% at VND18,000 per share.

On the negative side, lender SHB lost 0.8% at VND12,900 a share with 7.6 million shares traded. Petroleum technical service firm PVS also tumbled 5.9% at VND20,800 per share on volume of 5.5 million shares.
