Carina condo investor pledges compensation for fire victims

The Saigon Times Daily

HCMC – The investor of HCMC’s Carina Plaza condo complex, where a fire late last month killed 13 people, issued an official apology on Tuesday for affected residents, especially families of the 13 people killed and nearly 100 others injured, news website VnExpress reports.

Hung Thanh Construction, Trading, Service and Production Co Ltd formally apologized for its late response to the tragic incident due to the fact that the company’s director Nguyen Van Tung was among the injured, as he is also a resident at the complex.

Hung Thanh and its holding company, NBB Investment Corporation, has offered each family of the dead victims VND100 million in aid. Each injured victim is given financial support of  between VND5 million and VND50 million depending on severity.

The company has so far set aside more than VND2 billion to provide temporary residence for residents of other 668 apartments at the Carina Plaza, as the affected parts of the building have yet to be repaired. Any damage caused by the fire will be completely fixed, said the Hung Thanh director.

The repair process, however, has been postponed since March 30, as the local residents asked competent State agencies to cease it, pending an inspection. They were afraid that the company would change the scene of the fire, thereby affecting the investigation.

For cars and motorbikes destroyed in the fire, Hung Thanh Company has been contacting owners to pay adequate compensation in line with the value of such vehicles. The company is about to offer financial help to the owners of other damaged vehicles for repair.

Hung Thanh said the company is also a victim of the fire, so it wants authorities to determine responsibilities of the complex’s operation, management, and protection.

The company has hired Saigon Real Estate JSC to do such things. However, the latter has contracted Gia Khang Security Company to keep the vehicles at the building’s basement and ensure security in other sites.

“We as the investor pledge to take responsibility in line with prevailing regulations,” said Tung.

The Carina inferno on March 23 took 13 lives, injured nearly 100 others, destroyed 150 motorcycles and five cars, and damaged 10 other cars.

Preliminary investigation results found the deadly fire was attributed to a short circuit in a scooter’s wiring in the parking area of the building. No security guards were present at the time. All emergency doors were open and the fire alarm system as well as the water sprinkler system were not operational.

Colonel Nguyen Sy Quang, spokesman of the HCMC Police Department, earlier confirmed the filing of charges against the case which resulted from violations of fire prevention and fighting rules. The prosecution is aimed at finding those responsible for the deadly fire.
