The second HCMC Piano Competition kicked off at the HCMC Conservatory of Music last night, June 12, with the participation of more than 100 contestants.

The week-long competition is open to pianists of all nationalities, with age ranging from 6 to 24 years old.

The competition has two groups, with each group divided into four categories based on the contestants’ age. The preliminary round will be held from June 13 to 15 and the final round from June 16 to 17, both at the Concert Hall of the HCMC Conservatory of Music, 112 Nguyen Du Street in District 1.

Professional pianists from national music schools such as the Vietnam National Academy of Music, Hanoi College of Arts, HCMC Conservatory of Music and Hue Academy of Music, together with highly qualified candidates from South Korea and Hungary, will compete in the First Group.

The Second Group features non-professional candidates from cities and provinces across the country such as HCMC, Hanoi, Hue, Danang, My Tho, Can Tho and Nha Trang.

“I’m very happy seeing that last year’s top winners have gained great success in their career. We hope this year’s competition will be the springboard for potential candidates to develop and become successful pianists,” Ta Quang Dong, the conservatory’s principal and head of the organizing committee, said at the opening ceremony.

According to Dong, winners of the competition can be admitted to the conservatory without sitting any entrance exam and receive discounts on the conservatory’s upcoming summer camp. They will also have a chance to take part in the Music Camp 2018 in Hungary from July 13 to August 5.

The competition will be judged by Vietnamese and international professors of piano, including local professionals like Pianist Le Ho Hai, head of the Piano Department of the HCMC Conservatory of Music; pianist Pham Trong Chuong, dean of the Piano department at the Hanoi College of Arts; pianist Pham Nguyen Anh Vu, lecturer of the Piano Department at the HCMC Conservatory of Music; and pianist Nguyen Thuy Yen, deputy dean of the Piano Department at the HCMC Conservatory of Music.

International judges at the competition include Stephanie Shih-yu Cheng, piano lecturer at the University of Denver; Joo Eun Young, piano lecturer at the HCMC Conservatory of Music; Professor Gabor Eckhardt from Franz Liszt Academy of Music; Professor Tamara Rusanova from Gnesins Russian Academy of Music; and pianist Nguyen Anh Thu, deputy dean of the Basic Knowledge Department at the HCMC Conservatory of Music.

Sponsored by Yamaha Vietnam, Hansae and Fashion Worldwide, the total prize value of this year’s competition is VND100 million.

As the major sponsor, Yamaha will also present a U1J Yamaha piano worth VND99 million to the best contestant of the Second Group.

HCMC Piano Competition 2018 was earlier known as the Piano Amateur held by the Music Training and Development Center under the HCMC Conservatory of Music since 2014.

Piano Amateur was a competition for non-professionals to encourage the movement of learning classical piano in Vietnam with the annual number of contestants ranging from 60 to 130. In 2017, it was renamed as HCMC Piano Competition.

For the first time since its establishment, last year’s competition had professional contestants, and the board of judges has been expanded to include prestigious professors, and artists coming from not only different cities of Vietnam but also other countries.

HCMC Piano Competition 2018 is currently the most prestigious competition of its kind in southern Vietnam.
