HCMC – The HCMC People’s Council will next month consider a project to develop a 1,700-seat symphony-opera-ballet theater worth some VND1.5 trillion (US$65.6 million) in Thu Thiem New Urban Area, District 2.

According to the Department of Culture and Sports, the project will be funded by the city’s budget.

In August, a contest to choose the best design for the project will be held. The project is scheduled to begin construction in September next year and be completed by December 2022.

At present, most symphony concerts are held at the Opera House in District 1, which was built in 1898 and can accommodate only 500 people.

Artists and experts have noted that HCMC is in dire need of cultural infrastructure, particularly a large, modern symphony-opera-ballet theater, to meet the needs of local arts lovers. The city should also swiftly develop multipurpose art performing centers and sports centers to serve the 31st Southeast Asian Games (SEA Games 31) in 2021.

The city has mapped out a plan to build a multipurpose art performing center with four to 10 floors and three basements. The center may cover 40,300 square meters in Thu Thiem New Urban Area.

PQC Convention JSC has been chosen to design the SEA Games 31 center, which will feature modern equipment.

According to the HCMC Department of Culture and Sports, the city is rolling out sports projects by 2021, including the Phan Dinh Phung sport center in District 3, the Rach Chiec sports complex in District 2 and sports areas at Phu Tho Racetrack in District 11.
