The first round draw of the 2018/2019 Carabao Cup, or EFL Cup, was held at Thong Nhat Hall in HCMC last Friday by Thai energy drinks firm Carabao Group – sponsor of the cup, and Vietnam’s Ngoc Thien Bao Trading Co Ltd, with the participation of representatives from the English Football League (EFL) and former EFL Cup winners.

The event unveiled the 35 first-round ties, with live text coverage available on the Carabao Cup Twitter feed and EFL.com. The EFL Cup is now called Carabao Cup due to the title sponsorship deal with Thailand’s Carabao.

This was the first time Carabao Cup draw had taken place in Vietnam and second time overseas, with events having been staged in Bangkok and Beijing last season as part of the EFL’s continued efforts to build the value of the competition outside the UK.

“There is no requirement for us to take draws overseas, but there is an absolute commitment to building the value of our competition outside the UK and the market in Vietnam should help the EFL and Carabao meet our shared ambitions. The first round draw is always significant, mapping out the opening stages of a competition that continues to attract a large audience at home and abroad, with almost 1.5 million people attending Carabao Cup matches last season and games shown across the world in over 150 regions,” said EFL Chief Executive Shaun Harvey.

Seventy EFL clubs are featured in the new-look draw, which saw teams drawn into Northern and Southern sections, but with no seeding for higher ranked sides as in previous seasons.

At the event, Vietnamese football fans also had a chance to meet three former EFL Cup winners including Steve McManaman, Louis Saha and Dennis Wise.

“The success of Vietnam’s U23 football team at the AFC U23 Championship 2018 is the pride of Vietnamese football fans and helps nuture the love for the king of sports among Vietnamese people. Carabao Group and Ngoc Thien Bao Trading will join hands to organize more international football events in Vietnam in the coming time,” Tran Le Anh Thy, general director of Ngoc Thien Bao Trading Co Ltd, said at the event.

Thai energy drinks firm Carabao Group has become the tournament’s main sponsor since 2017. The EFL Cup was then renamed Carabao Cup but the rules have remained almost the same as previous seasons.

Matches are scheduled to take place on the week commencing August 13, 2018 with West Bromwich Albion included, while Championship newcomers Stoke City and Swansea City will join the competition in the second round alongside the Premier League clubs that are not competing in Europe.

This season’s Final will take place on February 24, 2019 with the winners guaranteed a place in the Europa League in the following campaign.
