Litchis shipped to over 30 countries

The Saigon Times Daily

HCMC – Since the start of the litchi harvest season, some 87,000 tons of litchis cultivated in Bac Giang Province have been exported to over 30 countries, local media reported, citing statements from the Ministry of Agriculture and Rural Development on Tuesday.

This year, Vietnamese litchis have penetrated major markets such as the European Union, Russia, the United States, Canada, mainland China, Australia and Japan thanks to the considerable efforts of traders and enterprises. Earlier, the fruit was mainly consumed locally. Notably, China ranks first among the major litchi importers, as the total volume of the fruit entering its market through the border gates amounted to 86,500 tons, with the remainder going to other nations.

The litchi harvest season will come to an end within 15 days, said Dao Xuan Cuong, deputy director of the Bac Giang Province Department of Industry and Trade. Meanwhile, litchi consumption in the province had totaled 183,836 tons as of June 25.

In addition, 178 Chinese traders have come to the province to join local traders in setting up temporary outlets for the purchase of litchis for shipment to China. Of the 500 outlets that will remain until June 25, 394 are located in Luc Ngan District, where litchis are cultivated on a grand scale.
