U.S. Secretary of State hails cooperation with Vietnam

United States Secretary of State Mike Pompeo hailed effective results of multi-faceted cooperation between the U.S. and Vietnam during his meeting with Party General Secretary Nguyen Phu Trong in Hanoi City on July 8, the Vietnam News Agency reports.

Pompeo said the U.S. wants to strengthen its comprehensive partnership with Vietnam and back the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) to play a central role in the Indo-Pacific region. He threw his support behind freedom of navigation operations and peaceful settlement of disputes in the East Sea in line with international law.

Fire scare possible cause of condo sales fall

Condominium sales in HCMC sharply declined in April-June possibly due to a deadly fire in late March, according to a quarter-two report on the HCMC market by commercial real estate services and investment firm CB Richard Ellis Vietnam (CBRE Vietnam).

Draft law bans restaurants from serving alcohol from 10 p.m.

The Ministry of Health’s latest draft of a law on control over alcoholic beverage consumption in Vietnam bans alcohol advertising and prevents beer and alcohol manufacturers from sponsoring cultural and sport events, activities. Also, hotels, restaurants, and bistros could not serve alcoholic drinks from 10 p.m., Phap Luat newspaper reported.

Cashew sector needs US$800 million loans

The Vietnam Cashew Association (Vinacas) will likely ask the State Bank of Vietnam for help as its members need commercial bank loans of up to US$800 million to import around 500,000 tons of raw cashew, heard a seminar in HCMC late last week.

Three banks to raise ATM fees in mid-July

Three major commercial banks – Vietcombank, VietinBank and BIDV – are set to raise charges on cash withdrawals from automated teller machines (ATMs), starting July 15, local media reported.
