HCMC - An International Conference on World Heritage and Sustainable Development in the Contemporary Context was jointly held in Halong City on July 9 by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism (MCST), Hanoi Office of the UNESCO, and Quang Ninh Province.

The conference was attended by MCST Deputy Minister Dang Thi Bich Lien, head of UNESCO Hanoi Office Michael Croft, vice chairwoman of Quang Ninh Province Vu Thi Thu Thuy, and more than 100 experts, policymakers, businessmen and representatives of the UNESCO and the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN).

Opening the conference, Deputy Minister Lien said the Vietnamese Government has attached special importance to strengthening the legal framework to protect natural and cultural heritage to contribute to local and national tourism development.

The conference offered a chance for Vietnamese and international governments to discuss with experts solutions for effective preservation and protection of world heritage in the contemporary context.

According to Lien, Vietnam currently has eight UNESCO world heritage sites including the Central Sector of the Imperial Citadel of Thang Long – Hanoi, the Citadel of the Ho Dynasty, the Complex of Hue Monuments, Halong Bay, Hoi An City, My Son Sanctuary, Phong Nha-Ke Bang National Park, and Trang An Landscape Complex.

UNESCO Hanoi Office chief Michael Croft spoke highly of the Vietnamese Government’s efforts in managing, preserving and promoting heritage sites. He stressed that in addition to cultural values, world heritage plays an important role in economic development, social sustainability, and environmental protection.

At the conference, experts and policymakers also discussed the role of public-private partnership and private sector in the sustainable development of heritage and practical measures to enhance the protection and promotion of world heritage, and shared regional and international experiences in the field.
