HCMC - The 20th International Shoes and Leather Exhibition (Shoes & Leather Vietnam 2018) kicked off on July 11 at the Saigon Exhibition & Convention Center in District 7, HCMC, with the participation of 700 domestic and international manufacturers and distributors in the sector.

According to the organizers, the expo is showcasing the products of enterprises from 26 countries and territories at the 16,000 square meter venue.

This year’s exhibition features 16 national pavilions, including those of Brazil, China, India, Italy, South Korea, Malaysia, Pakistan and Vietnam. The Italian pavilion, jointly hosted by the Consulate General of Italy in HCMC, the Italian Trade Agency and the Italian National Association of Manufacturers of Footwear, Leather Goods and Tanning Technologies, presents 26 Italian exhibitors.

Numerous leather-footwear products are on display at the exhibition, such as leather shoes and handbags, as well as materials and machinery. In addition, there are specialized seminars on techniques, technologies and the new trends of the sector.

According to leather-footwear accessories and equipment providers participating in the expo, Vietnam is attractive to global shoemakers. The country is the third largest manufacturer and the second largest exporter of shoes in the world.

According to data from the General Department of Vietnam Customs, the country fetched US$14.65 billion from footwear exports last year, up 12.7% year-on-year. The amount was US$7.79 billion in the first half of the year.

Despite the double-digit growth in export revenue, the contribution of domestic firms tended to drop while that of foreign direct investment (FDI) enterprises gradually increased.

The data from the customs agency also showed that FDI companies, mainly from China, Taiwan and South Korea, have contributed more than 80% of Vietnam’s total footwear export turnover.

The Shoes & Leather Vietnam exhibition, which was organized for the first time in 1999, is considered an important annual event for Vietnam’s leather-footwear sector.

The event is jointly organized by the Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association, international exhibition organizing firm Top Repute, the HCMC Shoes and Leather Association and Hien Dat Exhibition & Trading Service Co., Ltd.
