HCMC - More than 80 objects carved with dragon and phoenix images from the Nguyen Dynasty (1802–1945) are on display in the former imperial city of Hue as part of a celebration of the 25th anniversary of the UNESCO recognition of the complex of monuments in the city as a World Heritage Site and the 15th anniversary of nha nhac (Hue royal court music) being listed as an Intangible Heritage of Humanity.

These objects were used in daily activities and royal rituals of the kings and other royal members. They were made of gold, silver and precious stones, and engraved with images of dragons or phoenixes.

The exhibition at the Hue Museum of Royal Antiquities runs until December 5, according to the Vietnam News Agency. Some of the exhibits were borrowed from the Vietnam Museum of National History in Hanoi.

Phan Thanh Hai, director of the Hue Monuments Conservation Center, said dragons and phoenixes symbolize the might of the monarchy. Dragons were present on all items designed for males and phoenixes for females. Royal items carved with images of dragons and phoenixes are of cultural and historical value and they also indicate the skills of Nguyen Dynasty’s artisans.

The Hue Monuments Conservation Center has also taken this occasion to launch a book on Nguyen Dynasty’s items carved with images of dragons and phoenixes.
