HCMC - The Department of Natural Resources and Environment in the northwestern province of Yen Bai has warned local residents living along the Thao River against using water from the river for daily activities and cultivation, following the technical failure of a sewage-containing dam in Lao Cai, reported the local media.

The wastewater has been flowing into the river, and the acid content of the sewage may affect the quality of the river water.

The provincial department has collected water samples from the affected areas to analyze the impact level. Pending the test results, it has requested the local people in the city of Yen Bai, and the districts of Van Yen and Tran Yen to exercise caution while using the river water.

Besides this, the relevant agencies in wards and communes have been told to urgently inform individuals and organizations using the river water for manufacturing or daily activities of the water condition. Commune and ward-level authorities are reportedly monitoring the usage of the river water for agricultural production until an official statement on the water quality is issued.

Nguyen Anh Tuan, chairman of Tuy Loc Commune in the city, noted that residents of nine villages regularly collect water from Thao River to water more than 100 hectares of crops. However, recent downpours have kept the moisture content in the soil high, so the local people do not need to use the river water, Tuan said.

He added that the residents may nonetheless have problems with their crops if the quality of the river water has yet to be guaranteed in the next two weeks.

On September 7, GYPS, a wastewater facility at a fertilizer-processing plant under State-run chemical corporation Vinachem in Lao Cai Province, broke down, according to Lao Cai’s Department of Natural Resources and Environment.
