HCMC – The HCMC People’s Court on September 11 handed down tough sentences to the organizers of an illegal online soccer betting ring that raked in more than VND622 billion (US$26.7 million), reported the local media.

Ring leader La Tung Thinh, 55, was sentenced to nine years in prison for organizing gambling activities. His accomplices – Lu Vinh Loi, 55; Lac Thien Long, 43; and Cung Thi Thanh Thao, 38 – were sentenced to five years to seven-and-a-half-years behind bars on the same charge. All of them are residents of HCMC.

As many as 22 gamblers were given either probation of one-and-a-half years or custodial sentences of up to three-and-a-half years. Among them were an electrical engineer, a veterinarian, a fisheries engineer, a bank employee and a healthcare worker.

The betting ring operated via three websites – Vwin.com, W88.com and Fun88.com – and their servers were located in the Philippines. Foreign individuals colluded with the accused to organize gambling for the Vietnamese people at home.

The court stated Thinh and his accomplices had opened 60 bank accounts in their names and in the names of others to receive money transfers between 2014 and 2016.

Betting money, ranging from VND5 million (US$215) to VND63 million (US$2,700), on each soccer game, the gamblers transferred more than VND622 billion (US$26.7 million) to these accounts. One gambler reportedly spent VND1.6 billion by placing bets on 20 soccer matches.

Acting as intermediaries between foreign bosses and local gamblers, Thinh received more than VND208 million, while his accomplices – Loi, Long and Thao – received VND140 million, VND144 million and VND90 million, respectively.
