HCMC – National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines (VNA) will resume flights between HCMC and Osaka on September 18 following a temporary suspension due to Typhoon Jebi, which had caused Kansai International Airport to shut down.

As Kansai International Airport is in the process of recovery and can receive only a limited number of flights, the carrier will only operate one daily flight between HCMC and the Japanese city of Osaka, starting from September 18. It will resume direct air service from Hanoi City to Osaka after September 20, also with one daily flight.

To meet travel demands while repairs at the airport are underway, VNA intends to use Boeing 787 aircraft, which have more seats than the Airbus A321 planes, on the routes between Hanoi City and Japan’s Nagoya City from September 18.

The carrier will also start to replace its Airbus A321 planes with Boeing 787 aircraft on the HCMC-Nagoya route on September 21.

Earlier, Typhoon Jebi hit Japan and severely damaged Kansai International Airport, forcing VNA to cancel as many as 54 flights to the airport from September 4 to 17.

VNA offered feasible solutions, including allowing affected passengers to change their destination to another airport in Japan without charge and using wide-body aircraft on the Hanoi and HCMC-Nagoya routes to carry more passengers.

Jetstar Pacific had earlier announced the suspension of its air services on the Hanoi-Osaka and Danang-Osaka routes until September 20.
