DANANG - Her Majesty’s Canadian Ship (HMCS) Calgary will conduct a port visit to Danang City from September 26 to 30 as part of the Operation Projection campaign, which has scheduled visits to eight ports, according to a news release from the Canadian Embassy in Vietnam on September 19.

Other destinations of the Calgary as part of Operation Projection in the Asia-Pacific region are Darwin, Australia; Yokosuka, Japan; Yokohama, Japan; Jeju, Korea; Busan, Korea; Guam, United States, and Pearl Harbor, United States.

The deployment is aimed at strengthening existing defense partnerships and establishing new multinational relations to achieve greater interoperability and enhanced delivery of defense capabilities for future operations.

In Danang, HMCS Calgary’s members will participate in various events including visiting local children who are Agent Orange victims and the disabled, meeting with commercial partners, meeting with students from Phan Chu Trinh High School and taking part in a football match with the local navy.

“The crew of HMCS Calgary is looking forward to the visit to Vietnam,” Commander Blair Saltel, Commanding Officer HMCS Calgary, was quoted in the press release as saying. “Widely known for its hospitality and as a valued Canadian partner in Southeast Asia, Vietnam represents an opportunity for the Calgary to work with the local community and demonstrate our commitment to being a valued partner. The highlight will come upon the completion of the port visit when we put out to sea to exercise with the Vietnam People’s Navy to extend and improve our network of defense partnerships in the region.

“We are delighted that the HMCS Calgary will visit Da Nang, Vietnam. This ship visit will help celebrate the 45th anniversary of diplomatic relations between Canada and Vietnam and strengthen Canada’s engagement with Vietnam,” added Robert Bissett, Chargé d’Affaires a.i. at the Embassy of Canada in Vietnam.

HMCS Calgary is a Halifax-class frigate that recently completed an extensive Halifax class modernization/mid-life refit. HMCS Calgary has approximately 230 highly trained and professional sailors on board who are well prepared to meet the challenges of their deployment as part of Operation Projection. The ship recently participated in the world’s largest international maritime warfare exercise, which occurs biennially off the coast of Hawaii.
