VN-Index briefly soars to 1,000 points

HCMC – The benchmark VN-Index of the Hochiminh Stock Exchange briefly shot up to 1,000 points in the afternoon session today before it dipped below that level as some heavyweights came under strong selling pressure.

With 171 stocks rising and 116 others sliding, the VN-Index gained 2.05 points, or a mere 0.21% at 995.54. There were over 244.4 million shares worth some VND5.1 trillion changing hands on the southern bourse, up 23.8% and 3% against the previous day, respectively.

The local put-through market was active with over 38 million shares worth VND943.3 billion traded. Notably, agriculture firm HNG reported a high matching volume of over 24 million shares worth roughly VND380 billion.

Among the top 10 heavyweights, dairy producer VNM slid a slight 0.1% at VND137,800 a share. Property giant VIC and brewer SAB dropped by 1% and 1.3% at VND98,600 and VND200,000 each, respectively. Lenders VCB and CTG were also in the same boat.

In contrast, gas firm GAS rose by 2.3% at VND112,100 a share, and consumer goods firm MSN gained 1.2% at VND91,200. Lender TCB and BID also closed up.

Bank stock STB took the market lead by liquidity with its matching volume of 11.8 million shares, gaining 1.2% at VND12,550 each.

When a younger sister of Deputy General Director Hoang Duc Huy of Hoa Sen Group (HSG) successfully acquired five million HSG shares, the value of the steel maker’s shares gained 1.2% at VND12,250 each. More than 9.1 million of such shares were traded today.

Various small, medium and speculative stocks such as DLG, FLC, SCR, HBC, and KBC closed in the green, with DLG going up to the ceiling price after the closing of its dividend payment list with over seven million shares changing hands.

Similar to the southern bourse, the HNX-Index of the Hanoi Stock Exchange ended at an intraday high of 114.2, climbing 0.6 point, or 0.53%.

The northern market traded more than 62 million shares worth over VND818 billion, up a mere 1% in volume and 12.6% in value. Put-through transactions totaled 1.18 million shares worth some VND10 billion.

Gas and oil stock PVC did not go up to the ceiling price, but its value gained 8.1% at VND8,000. Its counterparts PVS and PGS also increased sharply.

Lender SHB added 2.4% at VND8,600 per share, and led the northern market by liquidity with more than 16.3 million shares transacted.
