Vietnam’s State President passes away aged 62

HCMC – Incumbent State President of Vietnam Tran Dai Quang passed away in the capital city of Hanoi at 10:05 a.m. today at the age of 62.

According to the Board of Healthcare Services for Senior Officials, despite efforts by doctors and professors at home and abroad, the President died of serious illness, reported the Vietnam News Agency.

He was born on October 12, 1956 in Quang Thien Commune, Kim Son District, Ninh Binh Province in northern Vietnam.

He was a professor with a doctorate degree in law. He used to serve as Director General of the Department of Security Advisory, Director General of the Directorate of Security and Deputy Minister of Public Security.

He was a graduate of the People’s Police University, the School of Foreign Languages under the Ministry of Home Affairs (now the Ministry of Public Security), and the Ho Chi Minh National Academy of Politics and Public Administration.

He was a member of the Politburo, the decision-making body of the Communist Party of Vietnam.

He rose through the ranks before serving as Deputy Minister of Public Security from 2006 to August 2011, and Minister of Public Security between August 2011 to March 2016.

During this period, he also worked as Deputy Head of the Central Steering Committee on Corruption Prevention and Control.

He was promoted from Lieutenant General to Colonel General in 2011, and to General one year later. He was a member of the Party Central Committee, a member of the Politburo, and a deputy of the National Assembly.

He was elected as Vietnam’s State President at the 11th session of the 13th National Assembly on April 2, 2016.
