HCMC - Several award-winning films among hundreds of international movies will be screened for the first time at the fifth Hanoi International Film Festival from October 27 to 31, with viewers admitted at no charge.

The films will give the audience an insight into the global contemporary cinema scene, with diverse dimensions of culture, society and people of each country where the films were made.

“Shoplifters” by Japanese director Hirokazu Koreeda, which won the Palme d'Or at the 71st Cannes Film Festival in May, will kick off the festival, according to the Vietnam News Agency.

Produced in 2017, the film tells the story of a family where love guides its members through difficulties. It was premiered in Japan in June 2018 and garnered US$37.8 million, becoming one of the highest-grossing films in the market this year.

“A Fantastic Woman” by Chilean director Sebastián Lelio, which won the 2018 Academy Awards for Best Foreign Language Film of the Year, will wrap up the film festival.

“A Ciambra”, a 2017 Italian drama film directed by Jonas Carpignano, promises to create memorable moments for the audience. The film is set in Rome with all actors and actresses being amateurs who play themselves. “A Ciambra” won the Label Europa Cinemas Award at the 71st Cannes Film Festival and was the representative of Italy to attend the 90th Oscars for Best Foreign Language Film Category.

Other notable names are “Ida” by Paweł Pawlikowski, which won Best Foreign Language Film of the Year at the 87th Oscars, 2002 biographical drama film “The Pianist” directed by Roman Polanski, “White Balloon”, a 1995 Iranian film directed by Jafar Panahi, and 2016 drama film “The Salesman” written and directed by Asghar Farhadi.

The fifth Hanoi International Film Festival, with the theme “Cinema: Integration and Sustainable Development,” is expected to screen more than 500 movies from nearly 50 countries and territories around the world.

The screenings will take place at the National Cinema Center, Kim Dong Movie Theatre, CGV Vincom Center Cinema, and BHD Star Vincom Cinema.

On the sidelines of the event, a number of seminars and talk shows, and a script-writing camp will be held. Awards will be presented at the closing ceremony, including those for best film, director, and actor/actress.
