HCMC – The Vietnam Tour Guides Association under the Vietnam Tourism Association will this month start rating tour guides in a pilot program, classifying them into three levels from three to five stars.

The ranking is based on three main criteria, including capacity (20% of the total score), knowledge (50%) and skills (30%). Tour guides who receive 51 points or more are ranked at the three-star, four-star or five-star levels.

The program will be applied to members of the association during the initial phase and will then be expanded to cover all tour guides after the pilot ends and the associated criteria and regulations are completed.

The pilot is slated to begin with the HCMC Tour Guide Association between October 22 and 24 and will be run in Hanoi City and Quang Ninh Province among other localities for the coming period.

“The Vietnam Tour Guides Association wants to improve tourism quality and create career opportunities for tour guides,” Vice Chairman of the association Bui Van Dung said at the rating program launch event, held in HCMC on October 11, adding that the activity will help travel firms easily seek and sign labor contracts with skilled tour guides at the five-star level.

The association currently has some 1,000 tour guides as members, while the country is home to 20,000 international and domestic tour guides, according to Dung.

The association is supported by the European Union in its efforts to build an information technology system to govern and assist tour guides. The system is scheduled for launch next year and will supply information on culture, history, and first aid and provide online training courses.
