CAN THO – The first waste-to-energy (WTE) plant in the Mekong Delta city of Can Tho began a trial operation on Monday.

The plant’s main investor is EB Environmental Energy Co., Ltd, in Can Tho City, a unit of China Everbright International Co., Ltd, and is operated by the Can Tho Everbright Environmental Protection Holdings Ltd.

Work on the plant started in June 2018. The project, which will last 22 years including the construction period, requires a total investment of VND1.05 trillion (US$45 million).

Covering over 5.3 hectares in Thoi Lai District, the plant is designed to treat 400 tons of household waste and generate 150,000 kilowatt hours of electricity per day.

Shao Qi-Chao, general director of EB Environmental Energy, said the ashes will be buried after the solid waste is burned, while the waste liquid and gases will be released into the environment after being treated.

Mai Nhu Toan, director of the municipal Construction Department, told the Saigon Times that the trial run is aimed at examining the stages of waste treatment and their operational procedures.

After the month-long trial run, the plant will be put into commercial operation on November 15. It is expected to help Can Tho City handle household waste, as it consumes up to 77% of the city’s total garbage volume.
