HANOI - The National Assembly today, October 24, approved the appointment of Major General Nguyen Manh Hung, former chairman and general director of the Viettel Military Industry and Telecoms Group, as the new Minister of Information and Communications with a vote of 95.05%.

A resolution on the election of the new minister was also approved on the same day.

Minister Hung, a member of the Party Central Committee, replaces his predecessor Truong Minh Tuan, who was formally relieved from the ministerial post yesterday, October 23, for his serious violations in the controversial deal in which MobiFone acquired 95% of pay TV firm An Vien Group.

Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc on July 25 appointed Hung to serve as acting minister of information and communications after the Politburo selected Hung as the secretary of the Party Committee of the ministry for the 2016-2021 tenure.

Hung, born in 1962 in the northern province of Phu Tho, was trained as a telecommunications engineer in the former Soviet Union. He earned a master’s degree in telecommunications from the University of Sydney, Australia, and holds another master’s degree in business administration from the National Economics University in Hanoi City.

Hung rose through the ranks of Viettel before becoming the general director of the group in March 2014. He was appointed its chairman and general director on June 14 this year.

Hung can be regarded as the architect of Viettel, helping the group achieve resounding success with its strategy of introducing telecom services to rural areas.
