HCMC - Nguyen Thi Phuong Khanh from the Mekong Delta province of Ben Tre bested 87 other contestants to be crowned Miss Earth 2018, making her the first Vietnamese woman to win the title.

As the second runner-up of Miss Ocean Vietnam Global, Khanh was picked to represent Vietnam at the pageant. The 24-year-old is 1.7 meters tall and weighs 51 kg.

On the final night that took place at the Mall of Asia Arena in the Philippines on November 3, Khanh made the top 4 list after a convincing short speech in English, together with three other finalists from Colombia, Austria, and Mexico.

In the final Q&A round, with her English proficiency, Khanh confidently expressed her thoughts on the greatest pressure on her generation. “Too much technology and social networking make young people only care about themselves,” she told the judges and the audience.

Khanh received her crown from Miss Earth 2017 Karen Ibasco, marking Vietnam's highest achievement in one of the world’s four major pageants, with the others being Miss World, Miss Universe, and Miss International.

As Miss Earth, Khanh will serve as spokesperson for the Miss Earth Foundation, the United Nations Environment Program and other environmental organizations. She will travel around the world to take part in charitable activities and projects that help save the environment, including school tours, tree planting, street campaigns, beach clean-ups, environmental fairs.

Melanie Mader from Austria was named Miss Air (first runner-up), Valeria Ayos from Colombia was Miss Water (second runner-up) and Melissa Flores from Mexico was crowned Miss Fire (third runner-up).

Miss Earth is an annual international beauty pageant that aims to promote environmental awareness. It was first held by Carousel Productions in 2001.
