HCMC – The third branch of the N-shaped steel overpass at Nguyen Kiem and Nguyen Thai Son Intersection in HCMC on January 18 was put into service, marking the completion of the project, VietnamPlus news site reported.

The steel overpass, which received total funding of VND504 billion, has three branches. The first arm connects Hoang Minh Giam Street with Nguyen Thai Son Street and is 362 meters long. The second branch stretching 367 meters links Nguyen Kiem Street in Go Vap District and Hoang Minh Giam Street. The first and second branches opened to traffic in July and November 2017, respectively.

Also, the 367-meter third arm, which was put into operation today, connects Nguyen Kiem Street in Phu Nhuan District with Nguyen Thai Son Street.

The flyover was built to help ease heavy traffic congestion on the roads leading to Tan Son Nhat (TSN) International Airport.

Vehicles can travel on or below the overpass to avoid using the often-congested intersection. As such, traffic around the airport can be effectively improved.

The Nguyen Kiem-Hoang Minh Giam flyover branch was intended to resolve traffic jams in the mornings when vehicles move from outlying districts to the downtown area of HCMC, while the two others help ease traffic gridlock at rush hour in the afternoons.

According to the Urban Traffic Management Unit No. 3, under the city's Department of Transport, with the new overpass branch, the flow of vehicles from Pham Van Dong Street to Tan Son Nhat International Airport will not suffer serious congestion from vehicles moving from Nguyen Kiem Street in Phu Nhuan District to Nguyen Thai Son Street.

The city is in the process of building and deploying a series of traffic projects near the airport to reduce the traffic overload there.

In July 2017, the municipal Department of Transport put the Y-shaped overpass at Truong Son Intersection into service. The overpass has a 153-meter-long branch leading to the airport’s domestic terminal and a branch of 303 meters leading to the international terminal.
