HCMC – The ministries of Agriculture and Rural Development and Planning and Investment have set a target of attracting 80,000-100,000 firms to invest in the agriculture sector in the years to come due to surging waves of investment in the sector, Sai Gon Giai Phong news site reported, citing representatives of the two ministries at a forum on January 22.

Speaking at the forum, titled, “Enterprises accompany the agriculture sector and farmers in 2019,” held by the General Council of Agriculture and Rural Development in Hanoi City, Nguyen Hoa Cuong, deputy head of the Enterprise Development Department, under the Ministry of Planning and Investment, said that the ministry has a circular on supporting and encouraging firms to invest in the agriculture sector and supporting them in removing barriers to investment.

Of the targeted figure, 3,000-4,000 are expected to be large enterprises. Meanwhile, medium-scale firms will account for 6,000-8,000 of the total.

Addressing the forum, Hoang Van Thang, deputy minister of Agriculture and Rural Development, said that the number of firms investing in agricultural fields such as farming, cattle-raising and seafood and farm produce processing is on the rise.

In 2018, up to 16 large-scale firms poured a combined VND8.7 trillion into the fruit-processing field, Thang said.

Referencing the fruit processing sector, Director of the Institute for Policy and Strategy for Agriculture and Rural Development Nguyen Do Tuan Anh noted that projects funded by large-scale firms and developed with modern technology could immediately receive five- or ten-year orders. Investment in the agriculture sector is on the rise, Anh added.

Cuong also boasted of the strong potential of the agriculture sector, using the coconut processing activities as an example and referencing a firm in the Mekong Delta region that is investing in the activity and exporting some one million coconuts to the United States, Australia and Saudi Arabia each year.
