HCMC – A high-speed passenger ship, Phu Quy Express, will be put into service on a trial basis on January 25, connecting HCMC’s Bach Dang Wharf with Con Dao Island off Ba Ria-Vung Tau Province, Tuoi Tre Online reported.

According to Tran Song Hai, general director of Greenlines DP Technology Co., Ltd, the ship service operator, the ship will ply the routes of Saigon-Con Dao and Can Tho-Con Dao.

The ship, once officially put into service, can accommodate up to 300 passengers traveling from Saigon to Con Dao within five hours. It is equipped with 230 flat-bed seats and 70 VIP seats, along with a camera system, air-conditioners and other equipment in line with international standards.

The modern double hull ship was built at Z189 shipyard in Haiphong City. The ceremonial ship launch was held in December last year.

With speeds of 27-30 nautical miles per hour, it takes a maximum of five hours to travel from Bach Dang Wharf to Con Dao and three to 3.5 hours to travel on the Can Tho-Con Dao sea route. The ship can operate normally in rough seas, able to cope with waves at level 8.

The ship operator wants to run the high-speed ship service on a trial basis to check its functions and speeds to ensure it meets safety requirements and lets passengers feel comfortable while on board, Hai remarked. The firm will then seek approval from the competent agencies to officially launch the ship service prior to April 30.

It is reportedly the first high-speed ship service to connect HCMC, Can Tho and Con Dao, satisfying the demand for travel among local residents, as well as promoting sea-route tourism.
