HCMC – The Hanoi Open Dragon Boat Racing Festival 2019, co-organized by Hanoi City and national flag carrier Vietnam Airlines at Ho Tay (West Lake) from February 16 to 17, attracted more than 700 racers.

According to Duong Tri Thanh, general director of Vietnam Airlines, in addition to local athletes from northern provinces as well as HCMC, Danang, and Binh Thuan, the event drew several foreign teams from Singapore, Malaysia, Laos and Hong Kong. It also saw the participation of the Embassy of Sweden and Swedish Alumni in Vietnam, the British Embassy in Hanoi and Chevening Alumni, the U.S. Alumni Association, and Vietnam Airlines.

During the two-day festival, the racers competed in 600-meter races in team of 12 people.

The Lao team and Quang Tri team won the first prize in the men’s and women’s professional categories respectively. In the amateur categories, the Ung Hoa, Chuong My and Vietnam Airlines teams were the respective winners of the men’s, women’s and mixed men-women’s finals.

Each of the professional champions bagged VND100 million, 16 Jetstar Pacific’s round-trip tickets, and medals.

First held in 2018, the Hanoi Dragon Boat Racing Festival is organized as part of an agreement between Hanoi City and Vietnam Airlines to promote the capital city’s cultural, sport and tourism development and preserve the nation’s traditional sports.
