CAN THO – Participants in the third edition of the Vietnam Shrimp Technology Exhibition (VietShrimp 2020), to be held in Can Tho City from March 25 to 27 next year, will discuss ways to overcome challenges affecting the shrimp sector’s sustainable development, officials said.

At a press briefing in the city yesterday, September 6, to introduce the exhibition, Pham Anh Tuan, chairman of the Vietnam Fisheries Society, the expo organizer, noted that the shrimp sector is deemed to develop sustainably if producers and processors report profits while ensuring environmental safety and following welfare policies for their employees.

However, the sector will face multiple challenges in achieving these goals. For example, farmers must combat shrimp diseases but cannot discharge hazardous substances into the environment.

Tuan stated that Vietnam is a large shrimp exporter, so its products must be of high quality and have competitive prices compared with products from other countries.

VietShrimp 2020 will feature seminars where solutions to these challenges will be discussed.

The event has been held twice before, in 2016 and 2018.

According to the Vietnam Association of Seafood Exporters and Producers, in the January-July period this year, Vietnam exported US$1.8 billion worth of shrimp, down 8% year-on-year.
