HCMC - Vietnam Airlines (VNA) on November 2 held a ceremony in Thailand’s Bangkok to launch its new services on the Bangkok-Danang and Phuket-HCMC routes.

The ceremony was attended by Vietnamese Prime Minister Nguyen Xuan Phuc, who has been in Bangkok for the 35th ASEAN Summit taking place from November 1 to 4.

The national flag carrier has operated three weekly flights on the Phuket-HCMC route since October 27. Flights depart from HCMC at 3:50 p.m. and those from Phuket start at 6:40 p.m. on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays.

Meanwhile, air services on the Bangkok-Danang route will be operated daily, with flights departing from Bangkok at 6 p.m. and from Danang at 3:20 p.m.

Along with regular flights on the Hanoi/HCMC-Bangkok routes, the airline now operates up to 52 weekly flights between Vietnam and Thailand.

Since VNA launched an air route between Vietnam and Thailand 40 years ago, the airline has regularly invested in increasing flight frequency to meet the market demand and in improving service quality on par with international four-star standards. VNA uses the wide-body aircraft Boeing 787-9 Dreamliner on the HCMC-Bangkok route.

With an average growth rate of over 15% in the 2015-2018 period, Thailand is among the largest and steadiest air transport markets of Vietnam Airlines. Year-to-date, the carrier has transported over 700,000 passengers on the Vietnam-Thailand routes, rising 6% compared with the 2018 figure.

Addressing the ceremony, Le Hong Ha, deputy general director of VNA, said that the airline is expected to open more air links between the two countries in the coming months, given the high potential of the Thai market.

On the same day, budget carrier Thai Vietjet announced the commercial launch of two new direct services connecting Bangkok and Chiang Rai with Udon Thani, which is home to the largest overseas Vietnamese community in Thailand.

Thai Vietjet will operate the Bangkok-Udon Thani route on a daily basis starting from November 25, plus an additional flight departing from Bangkok at 4:25 p.m. and arriving in Udon Thani at 5:35 p.m. on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays.

Meanwhile, it will operate three weekly flights on the Chiang Rai-Udon Thani route from November 26, on Tuesdays, Thursdays and Sundays. Passengers will soon be able to conveniently travel to Udon Thani from Bangkok and Chiang Rai in just over an hour.

With a modern fleet of over 80 Airbus aircraft, Vietjet currently operates 150 routes covering domestic and foreign destinations with some 400 flights daily. To date, the airline has carried nearly 100 million passengers. The number of passengers transported by Vietjet between Thailand and Vietnam and within Thailand has reached nine million.
