Preschool applying Italian educational method launched in HCMC

HCMC - Embassy Education of Vietnam and Reggio Children of Italy on November 8 launched Little Em's, the first preschool in the country that applies the Reggio Emilia Approach at 21 Pham Ngoc Thach Street, District 3, HCMC.

With the Reggio Emilia Approach, Little Em's will creatively apply this unique preschool model suitable to the Vietnamese social context, and maintaining and promoting cultural identity among Vietnamese children.

The curriculum at Little Em's not only prepares children with the skills they need for the future, but also combines a wide range of subjects integrated with the arts to give them holistic personality formation and competence development.

Speaking at the launching ceremony, Bui Vu Thanh, founder of Embassy Education, said the Reggio Emilia classroom is a miniature society without discrimination and without stigma, where everyone respects children and children know how to respect others.

“The Reggio Emilia Approach teaches children both the “I” and the “We.” It’s an approach that empowers and nurtures all children, regardless of race, color or social status. So I want to bring the approach to Vietnam, not only for my own children but I hope to as many Vietnamese children as possible.”

Launched in 1940, Reggio Emilia Approach is an innovative educational method founded and developed by Italian psychologist Loris Malaguzzi with the philosophy: “Our mission is to arouse the creativity of young children so that they conquer the highest mountain possible with their own feet. No one but them can do more than that.” The method is named after the village of Reggio Emilia in northern Italy, where Malaguzzi embarked on his research and development of this passionate project.

Teachers of Reggio Emilia Approach always record children’ development throughout the year to help them and their parents notice daily changes, not only physically, mentally, emotionally but also in their skills development. This helps the children, parents and teachers become aware of the development, thereby facilitating the exchange and planning of the children’ learning in the future.

On the occasion, Dr. Claudia Giudici, president of Reggio Children, partnered with Embassy Education, through its member Global Embassy, to organize an education conference to introduce and disseminate precisely and fully the Reggio Emilia Approach to early childhood educators, training experts, education officials, teachers and parents on November 9.

The conference also featured Trung Le, co-founder of 180 Studio Design, who has designed many education institutions in the U.S. and Asia. He shared his unique insight into the relationship between the architecture of a school and the learning process of children, through the topic “The classroom is the ‘third teacher' - architectural concepts of a Reggio Emilia Approach school”.

Especially, Ton Nu Thi Ninh, former deputy chair of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the National Assembly of Vietnam, shared perspectives on how educators and parents can best prepare the future young generation in the face of big issues such as globalization, climate change and technological development.
