Vietnam kurash athletes take more five golds at SEA Games

HCMC - Vietnamese kurash athletes clinched more five gold medals on day two of competition at the 30th SEA Games in the Philippines today, December 2, staying on the second place in the medal tally.

The Philippines maintained the lead after taking 38 gold, 20 silver and 13 bronze medals on the first two days of competition. Vietnam is second with 15 golds, 20 silvers and 16 bronzes and Malaysia ranks third with 10 golds, two silvers and 19 bronzes.

Vietnam also won five silver medals in the weightlifting and arnis events and five bronze medals in the wushu, weightlifting, arnis, duathlon and 3x3 basketball events.

In the kurash event, Le Duc Dong beat Philippine opponent Llamas Al Rolan 3-0 in the final game of in the men's 66kg category, taking the first gold medal in the day. Nguyen Thi Thanh Thuy dominated in the women’s 70kg category, netting another gold.

Vu Ngoc Son knocked out Captipon Lloyd Dennis from the Philippines in the men’s under-73kg category to take the third gold for his team. Bui Minh Quan defeated Ardiata Komang from Indonesia 1-0 in the final game to grasp the gold in the men’s 81kg category while Nguyen Thi Lan overcame the Philippine opponent Estrella Bianca Mea in the women’s under-70kg category.

Weightlifter Thach Kim Tuan, the gold medal’s hopes of Vietnam, just earned the silver medal in the men's 61kg category with a total lift of 304 kilograms, just five kilograms behind first-placed Eko Irawan from Indonesia. Nguyen Thi Thuy also bagged the silver in the women’s 55kg category.

Arnis athlete Vuong Thanh Tung brought home the silver medal in the men's over-65kg category. Both Nguyen Duc Tri and Van Cong Quoc took the silver each in the men’s under-60kg and under-55kg categories.

Earlier, Vietnam clinched three gold medals on the first day of the arnis competition in the Games on Sunday. Vu Thi Thanh Binh brought home the gold in the women’s under-55kg category while Dao Thi Hong Nhung and Nguyen Thi Cam Nhi took home the gold each in the women’s under-60kg and over-60kg categories.

The Vietnam U-22 squad beat arch rivals Indonesia 2-1 in their third game on Sunday to go top of Group B with nine points. Indonesia and Thailand, who defeated Singapore 3-0 on Sunday, have six points each but Thailand ranks second thanks to goal difference.

Sani Rizki Fauzi opened the score for the Indonesian side in the 23rd minute with a header and striker Nguyen Thanh Chung leveled the score in the 64th minute with back header before Nguyen Hoang Duc finished it off at 2-1 in the injury time.

Today, Vietnam will meet Singapore at 7:00 p.m. and Laos will take on Thailand at 7:00 p.m. while Indonesia will meet Brunei at the same time.
