HCMC – The Ministry of Industry and Trade has approved a proposal by Vietnam Electricity Group (EVN) to continue purchasing electricity from rooftop solar power projects.

EVN had earlier proposed the ministry allow it to direct power corporations to record the volume of electricity generated from rooftop solar power projects. Payment for the electricity generated will be made after the competent agencies issue official instructions, the local media reported.

Despite agreeing to EVN’s proposal, the Ministry of Industry and Trade asked the group to announce to investors that they may face risks as policies encouraging the development of solar power in Vietnam may change from July 1.

On December 31 last year, the ministry sent the prime minister a draft policy decision designed to encourage solar power development. Accordingly, the solar power price may be lowered from 9.35 to 8.38 U.S. cents per kilowatt hour.

EVN must ensure that rooftop solar power projects are connected to the national grid in line with the law and that the connection would not overload the national grid.
