CAN THO – The government of the Mekong Delta province of Dong Thap has planned to create a more favorable business environment this year to accelerate the development of the private sector, Dong Thap Chairman Nguyen Van Duong told a press briefing on January 7.

Speaking at the press conference on the province’s socioeconomic performance in 2019, Duong said that the plan is one of the province’s key priorities in 2020.

In 2019, the province fulfilled some socioeconomic development targets, including the production value of agriculture, forestry and fisheries estimated at VND60.3 trillion, up VND2.7 trillion against 2018, and the added value of industries reaching an estimated VND10.2 trillion, up 8.1% from the 2018 figure.

The total retail revenue from consumer goods and services in 2019 amounted to an estimated VND95 trillion, rising by 11.7% versus 2018, said Duong.

The province attracted 3.9 million tourists last year, including 95,000 international tourist arrivals, and earned over VND1 trillion in tourism revenue, up 15% against 2018.

Addressing the conference, Le Minh Hoan, the provincial Party chief of Dong Thap, said that a slew of products made in Dong Thap Province have been shipped to many countries and territories. The province booked over US$1 billion in export revenue in 2019, the highest ever.

The chairman of the province attributed these achievements to favorable business climate.

“Dong Thap Province ranked second among Vietnam’s top performers in Provincial Competitiveness Index,” Duong said.

To maintain these achievements, this year, the province will build a more favorable business and investment environment, support startups and boost the growth of the private sector, as part of its growth plan, Duong said.

Apart from boosting the growth of commercial and service activities, Dong Thap Province will continue restructuring the agriculture towards climate change adaptation associated with rural development. Additionally, the province looks to make tourism a key industry featuring special products and highlighting the image of province.

Duong expects the province’s economic growth to hit 7% in 2020, compared with the 2018 result of 6.47%.
