HCMC - Emerging artist Vo Tran Chau will showcase her artworks mostly made from fabric at The Factory Contemporary Arts Centre in District 2 of HCMC from February 14 until April 10.

“Leaf Picking in the Ancient Forest” will be Chau’s largest solo exhibition to date, displaying her recent works exploring the notion of heritage, retrieving and rethinking what defines the legacies of history.

The artist has worked with fabric for many years. Over the past two years, Chau has been collecting garments dumped in unidentified containers around docks in HCMC.

She recalls feeling puzzled by the excessive production of the fashion industry and its impact on the environment, particularly on developing countries who are the major producers in the industry.

The artist questions the consequences of development at all costs. “Monetary gains have blinded people. Will we be able to see the soul of a city anymore? What will be left of a city if not its cultural identity?” she said in an interview.

For the works in this exhibition, Chau recycles these unwanted clothes by transforming them into hanging mosaic paintings, many of them depicting sites that no longer exist, such as textile factories in Nam Dinh Province, Saigon Tax Trade Center, and Tra Co cathedral.

Working with the digital photos of these sites, Chau turns these photos into pixel graphs, which she uses as a foundation to recreate mosaics by sewing fabric squares together.

By reconstructing architectural structures and symbols that have completely or partially disappeared from public memory, the artist reflects how cultural identity is pictured and remembered.
