HCMC – Vietnam is expected to produce kits which aim to speed up the detection of a novel coronavirus, which has emerged from the Chinese city of Wuhan.

A group of scientists successfully developed a batch of test kits that can shorten the time needed for detection of the new virus to 70 minutes instead of the current three hours, reported the Government news website.

The isothermal amplification test kits, developed by the scientists from the School of Biotechnology and Food Technology, under the Hanoi University of Science and Technology, amplify the ribonucleic acid of pathogens to identify them.

A test using the new kits would cost VND350,000 (US$15), while one with the reverse transcription polymerase chain reaction kit costs some VND1 million (US$43), pointed out the lead scientist Le Quang Hoa at a conference on Saturday.

The scientists have worked on developing the new kits since the virus’s genome sequence was published on the GenBank sequence database on January 13.

Deputy Prime Minister Vu Duc Dam, who is in charge of a steering committee for the prevention and control of the spread of coronavirus, tasked the National Institute of Hygiene and Epidemiology with coordinating closely with the scientists, at a meeting on Monday.

He asked the team to evaluate the effectiveness and safety of these kits and to support their production.

Vietnam is home to 22 facilities capable of conducting coronavirus tests, and eight more can be mobilized, if needed, according to the Ministry of Health.
