HCMC – National flag carrier Vietnam Airlines is preparing two options for the possible travel ban of the European Union amid the fast spreading coronavirus.

Talking to the Vietnam News Agency this morning, March 17, a representative of Vietnam Airlines said the airline’s flight plan between Vietnam and Europe will depend on the European Union members’ decision at a meeting at 12 p.m. (local time) today on whether to ban all arrivals.

Under the first option, if the European Union decides to close its airspace, Vietnam Airlines will suspend all flights between Vietnam and Europe.

The departure time of the last flights will be timed for 15 minutes after the airspace is closed. For example, Vietnam Airlines’ aircraft commonly depart from France at 1:15 p.m. (local time). If the airspace is closed, the last Vietnam Airlines flight from France will depart at 1:30 p.m.

Under the second option, Vietnam Airlines will work with the government, diplomatic missions and European authorities to carry Vietnamese citizens back to Vietnam from Europe even after the airspace is closed.

“Vietnam Airlines is always ready if the government and the prime minister ask the airline to help Vietnamese citizens in Europe return to Vietnam,” the Vietnam Airlines representative noted.

“However, all of our options will depend on the EU’s decision,” he added.

Vietnam Airlines is operating an average of five flights per day for Vietnamese passengers returning from the United Kingdom, France and Germany.

Passengers on these flights must be in good health and meet all eligibility requirements for immigration.

These flights are under strict medical control to ensure the safety of all passengers and crew.

Passengers have to undergo compulsory health checks and be placed under quarantine, according to the Ministry of Health’s regulations, after landing.
