HCMC – The Ministry of Health reported five more coronavirus cases this afternoon, March 23, with three confirmed in HCMC, bringing the country’s total confirmed cases to 121.

The 117th and 118th cases reportedly contracted the coronavirus in Cambodia before returning to Vietnam through the border gates, raising concerns over the potential spread of infections through these points of entry over the porous border line.

Patient 117, a 30-year-old man, traveled to Cambodia between March 9 and 19. The resident of the Mekong Delta province of Long An developed symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath on March 16. He returned to Vietnam through the Moc Bai border gate in Tay Ninh Province on March 19 and was then quarantined at Tay Ninh General Hospital.

The 118th case, a 23-year-old woman living in An Giang Province, also returned to the country through the Moc Bai border gate on March 19. She is an employee of a Cambodia-based casino. On crossing the border gate, she presented symptoms of fever, cough and shortness of breath and was taken to Tay Ninh General Hospital for quarantine and examination.

Chest X-rays in both cases showed their lungs were partly damaged, the local media reported.

Among the three latest cases in HCMC, two are foreigners. One is a 29-year-old American citizen who lives in Binh Thanh District and works at a financial consulting company headquartered on Floor 13 of the Mplaza Saigon building in HCMC’s District 1.

Before developing symptoms of cough, fever and sore throat on March 19, he had traveled to Indonesia and Thailand regularly.

Another foreigner, confirmed as the 120th patient, is a foreign-language teacher living in District 2 and had close contact with the 91st case from March 14 in various places, such as eateries and a bar called Buddha in District 2.

On March 21, the 27-year-old Canadian citizen showed symptoms of cough and fever and was taken to a Cu Chi-based field hospital for treatment and quarantine.

The last case in HCMC is a 58-year-old man who lives in Tan Binh District. On March 19, he and his wife returned to Vietnam from New York through Tan Son Nhat International Airport before transiting through Japan a day earlier. The man presented symptoms of the virus on March 20.

Together with three cases reported earlier this morning, the country saw as many as eight cases being confirmed in a single day.
