HCMC – The authority of Dong Nai Province has sought approval from the prime minister for an investment plan to widen the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway to 10-12 lanes, aiming to address the constant traffic congestion on the road due to a higher-than-expected surge in vehicular traffic.

The gridlock worsens at the An Phu intersection in HCMC’s District 2 and at another section where the expressway intersects with National Highway 51, reported Thanh Nien newspaper.

Besides this, the expressway is one of the key routes to the Long Thanh international airport. The expansion is necessary for the existing eight-lane road to meet the rise in travel demand when the new airport begins operations, Cao Tien Dung, chairman of the provincial government, said in the proposal sent to the head of the Government.

The Ministry of Transport approved the construction of the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway in 2007.

In the first phase, the An Phu-Long Thanh section was built with four lanes for both roads and bridges and was put into service in 2015. As for the second phase, the An Phu-Long Thanh and Long Thanh-Dau Giay sections were earlier scheduled to be expanded to eight and six lanes in 2020, respectively, Dung said.

This is not the first time that the provincial government of Dong Nai has proposed an expansion plan for the regularly congested expressway.

In mid-2019, given the severe traffic congestion along the road, Dong Nai petitioned the Transport Ministry to consider widening it to 12 lanes from the planned eight lanes. The southern province made this proposal right after the Airports Corporation of Vietnam presented a plan to add three main roads, including the expressway, to connect HCMC and other localities with Long Thanh airport.

According to Vietnam Expressway Services Engineering JSC (VEC E), which manages the HCMC-Long Thanh-Dau Giay Expressway, 75,000 vehicles travel on the road each day, though it was designed to only serve 59,000 units per day. As a result, VEC E has had to issue many notices on weekends and holidays, recommending drivers choose other roads for travel during rush hour to avoid traffic congestion on the expressway.
